What You Need to Know About Installing a Type II Commercial Hood

A Type II commercial hood (also called a condensate hood) is designed to remove heat, steam, humidity, odors, and condensation. Unlike a Type I hood, it is not approved for grease-laden vapors and cannot be installed over equipment that produces grease.

Type II Hood Requirements

  • Installed with vibration isolation when required

6. Condensate Management

Steam creates water inside the hood.
A proper installation includes:

  • Internal condensate collection

  • Drain channels

  • Drain connections when required

Fire Protection

Unlike Type I hoods:

  • Type II hoods generally do not require a fire suppression system, because they are not intended for grease-producing appliances.

  • If grease-producing equipment is installed beneath the hood, a Type I hood with an automatic fire suppression system is required instead.
