5 Signs to Review Before You Call for Air Conditioning Repair
Is Your Air Conditioner Not Cooling?
Before scheduling a repair, check these five common issues that homeowners can safely inspect.
1. Check Your Thermostat
Make sure the thermostat is:
Set to COOL mode.
Set below the current room temperature.
Has working batteries (if applicable).
Programmed correctly.
2. Inspect Your Air Filter
A dirty air filter can:
Reduce airflow.
Cause poor cooling performance.
Increase energy bills.
Lead to frozen evaporator coils.
Replace the filter if it looks dirty. Most filters should be changed every 1–3 months.
3. Check Your Circuit Breaker
If your system won’t start:
Inspect your electrical panel.
Reset a tripped breaker only once.
If it trips again, stop resetting it and call a licensed HVAC technician.
4. Look at the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Make sure:
Leaves, grass, and debris are cleared away.
There is at least 24 inches of open space around the unit.
The fan is spinning normally.
There is no visible ice on the refrigerant lines.
5. Listen and Watch for Warning Signs
Call for professional service if you notice:
Warm air coming from the vents.
Strange noises (grinding, buzzing, banging, or squealing).
Water leaking indoors.
Ice on the refrigerant lines.
Unusual odors.
The system turning on and off repeatedly.
